House bills vs. business receipts etc. I’m very careful with my money. I budget and don’t overspend. I’d like more but I’m comfortable with it. I have no issues with money. Marketing, branding, wardrobe, image…I don’t over think it - I'm just me. I’m very happy with the ‘package’ and have professionals who style me. I’m ‘on brand’ and it works with my music. Networking... you mean I have to talk to complete strangers and tell them I'm great? No thanks. OK, so I know I’m supposed to ‘network’ but I feel awkward and don’t want to be seen as arrogant – so I just wait for people to ask what I do. I feel confident mostly but I probably could get more out of going to that sort of event. Not sure how effective they are. I can talk to people with ease. I’m a laid back sort so I go with the flow – don’t plan it. I always know what I want and I am confident in asking. Usually, other people are asking me to work with them. We hope that you have some insight into areas to work on and where you can give yourself a pat on the back. Next Step 1-3These are some areas that you might want to focus on: 1. Practice. A lot. Get better at something every day and don’t give up. The struggle shows how much you want this. But wanting it isn’t enough. Dedication, discipline and determination to do what you love and create whatever it is you are inspired to. 2. Get organised. Learn as much about the business as the music – it’s the ‘music business’ – you need to know both. Just because you don’t want to know or do the ‘boring’ admin and accounting, doesn’t mean that you don’t need to. This is what enables you do your thing. 3. Anything holding you back? These are where the cracks appear sometimes. Where you just can’t seem to move forward no matter what you do. Great intentions, no delivery. Why is that? There will be a reason and it’s asking for your attention. Find some support and get through those blocks. AA offers 1:1 coaching – and there are many others. Find someone you trust and see if talking to them helps. Next Step 4-6These are some areas that you might want to focus on: 1. Get honest and independent feedback on what you need to work on. Unless you know what the issue is, you can’t fix it. Do you need to get better songs? Better production or a more modern sound? Is your brand/look dated? Is your social media not working for you? Take a good, long, honest look at yourself on video and with and without audio. Is what you see and hear what the market wants? Are there any areas to improve upon? 2. Sometimes, you just need to keep going. It might not happen as quickly as you’d like – that’s how it goes sometimes. It’s worth asking yourself this ‘I’m I blocking success in some way?’. Now that might sound stupid to you – because of how hard you’ve worked or how much you want to succeed. Sometimes, though, we can sub-consciously sabotage ourselves due to some limiting beliefs about what success might mean. Even getting paid the money you deserve and have earned might be subject to limiting beliefs around money. Can’t hurt to check! 3. Get a plan. What is the next logical step for you in your music career? Put a plan together to get there. Step by tiny step. Then follow the plan. Every day do something that will get you closer. Next Step 7-9These are some areas that you might want to focus on: 1. You’re pretty sorted and seem to be fine with most areas of your music and business. The key question for you is ‘What else?’ – what more do you want to do and achieve? What’s possible? 2. Staying inspired and not tired of doing the same stuff may be an area to challenge yourself on too. It’s easy to stagnate if you’re not careful. Find ways to stay connected to your inspiration and creativity so you always grow and evolve. 3. Who would you love to work with? How can you make that happen? Also good questions to stay inspired and relevant in an ever evolving and changing market. Next Step 10-12These are some areas that you might want to focus on: 1. If you’ve had success and even fame it’s great to bask in that glory and enjoy the fruits of your labour and have fun. Some key questions for you might be – how am I after maybe years of touring, studio time etc? Am I fit and healthy in mind and body – or do I need some extra support and time out? It’s not just OK to do this – it’s essential for our balance and mental and physical health. 2. Am I still inspired? Am I still relevant? We need to evolve and re-invent ourselves to keep from being a ‘has-been’ or a ‘used to be’. So what’s next for you? 3. How are my family and friends? Do I check in with them enough and ensure I spend time with them. After all, they’ve likely been with you in the background for years. Our happiness and productivity is often linked with our inner world and our outer world of those around us.
